An Unforgettable Journey: Our Ghana Adventure

An Unforgettable Journey: Our Ghana Adventure

Hello there! Let's embark on a recount of our extraordinary journey to Ghana, shedding light on our decision to embrace Africa as the centrepiece of this year’s collection.

On the 7th of May, 2023, we, the Y1 team, embarked on what can only be described as the journey of a lifetime to Ghana. Over the span of a week, our days were brimming with coaching sessions, matches, and the exploration of the myriad wonders that Ghana generously offered.

The Adventure Begins: May 7th, 2023

Our adventure commenced with the break of dawn, as our team members embarked on their journey, some as early as 3:00 am, with our dedicated videographer, Ryan, setting off at 10:30 pm the previous night. Demonstrating true dedication, indeed! Upon arrival, the hospitality of Isaac from Legon Knights HC and Prince from Grassroots Hockey awaited us, quickly ushering us to our hostel. Barely settled, we ventured out to dine under the open skies with the Legon Knights hockey team, where Fried Yam and Tilapia quickly became favourites, accompanied by what was unanimously voted as the "best beer in the world," a local lager known as "Club," all set against the backdrop of exhilarating live hi-life music.

Coaching in Accra: May 8th

Our day commenced at the crack of dawn on May 8th, setting off to the National Hockey Pitch in Accra. The morning was filled with playful challenges and a stick-testing session, setting the stage for the first of our three coaching clinics. The clinic saw about 25 eager young participants from Legon Knights, engaging in activities spread across three stations ran by Darcy, Alex, and Ollie. The day's intensity was matched by the heat, prompting a well-deserved afternoon of relaxation at a beach club for some of our team members.

Dinner brought another round of local culinary delights, shared with Isaac, Asantewaa, and Joseph. The dishes of the night were Casava, Tilapia, and Kelewele, with a highly recommended local ginger juice that certainly lived up to its reputation.

A Cultural Immersion: May 9th

Another day dawned bright in Accra, filled with cultural visits and historical exploration. Meeting with the Legon Knights at Black Star Square, we delved into the fascinating history of the location. Isaac, with his keen photographic eye, guided us through the Square, uncovering stunning shooting locations and even securing us exclusive access to areas typically closed to the public. The day's journey also introduced us to Fufu, a traditional West African dish, providing a truly authentic culinary experience.

The Heart of Our Mission: Akim Oda, May 10th

Our travels on May 10th took us to Akim Oda, a quaint town nestled northwest of Accra, marking a pivotal moment in our journey. Our mission led us to St Francis School to donate hockey sticks, designed by one of its talented students. The day concluded with heartwarming hospitality from Prince and the students, leaving us with memories that would last a lifetime.

Coaching, Games, and Goodbyes: May 11th

The following day was filled with "pinch-me" moments, starting with a vibrant school mass and leading to a coaching clinic that showcased the enthusiasm and talent of the local players. The day ended with a farewell to St Francis School, but not before leaving an indelible mark on our hearts.

The Final Chapter: May 12th

Our journey concluded with an early morning hockey match, a testament to the spirit and passion for hockey in Ghana. The day was a beautiful blend of sportsmanship and cultural exchange, perfectly encapsulating the essence of our trip.

As we bid farewell to Ghana, our hearts were full of gratitude for Isaac, Prince, and all the wonderful individuals who made our journey unforgettable. This trip was a powerful reminder of the impact of sports in uniting communities and fostering change.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our community for their unwavering support. This expedition has laid the groundwork for future partnerships aimed at making a lasting impact in the world of hockey and beyond.

Stay tuned for more updates, and thank you for joining us on this incredible journey.
